Root Canal Treatment

Saving Your Natural Tooth

Root canal treatment is used to treat infection inside a tooth, helping to relieve symptoms and preserve the natural tooth wherever possible. By removing the infected tissue from within the tooth and carefully cleaning and sealing the root canals, treatment can often prevent the need for extraction.

At Shaftesbury Dental Care, we take a careful, considered approach to root canal treatment, with a focus on preserving your natural teeth and keeping you comfortable throughout your care.

What Is Root Canal Treatment?

Inside every tooth is a soft tissue known as the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels.

If the pulp becomes infected or inflamed, it can cause pain, sensitivity and swelling. Without treatment, the infection may spread and the tooth may eventually need to be removed.

Root canal treatment removes the infected tissue from inside the tooth before carefully cleaning, disinfecting and sealing the root canals.

The tooth is then restored so it can continue to function naturally for many years to come.

Signs You May Need Root Canal Treatment

You may require root canal treatment if you experience persistent toothache, pain when biting or chewing, sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers, swelling around a tooth or gum, tooth discolouration or a recurring abscess. Sometimes there are no obvious symptoms, which is why regular dental examinations remain so important.

Is Root Canal Treatment Right for You?

 Every tooth is different.

During your consultation, your dentist will carefully assess your tooth before recommending the most appropriate treatment.

In many cases, root canal treatment allows us to save a tooth that might otherwise need to be removed.

If another treatment would provide a better long-term outcome, we'll explain all of your options clearly, allowing you to make an informed decision with complete confidence.

The Root Canal Treatment Process

Consultation
Your dentist will examine the affected tooth, discuss your symptoms and, where necessary, take X-rays to assess the tooth and surrounding area. We'll then explain whether root canal treatment is the most appropriate option for you.

Removing the Infection
Once the tooth has been numbed with local anaesthetic, your dentist will carefully access the inside of the tooth and remove the infected or inflamed pulp. The root canals are then thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.

Sealing the Root Canals
Once cleaned, the root canals are carefully filled and sealed to help prevent bacteria from re-entering the tooth and causing further infection.

Restoring the Tooth
After root canal treatment, the tooth will need to be restored and protected. Depending on the tooth and how much healthy tooth structure remains, this may involve a filling or a dental crown. Your dentist will explain the most appropriate option for your individual case.

FAQs

Why do I need root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment is recommended when the inside of a tooth has become infected or inflamed. Treating the infection allows us to preserve the tooth whenever possible.

Is root canal treatment painful?
No. Treatment is carried out using local anaesthetic and is designed to relieve pain caused by infection rather than create it.

Will I need a crown afterwards?
Many teeth benefit from a dental crown following root canal treatment because it helps strengthen and protect the remaining tooth structure. Your dentist will explain whether this is recommended for your tooth.

Is removing the tooth a better option?
Whenever possible, preserving your natural tooth is usually the preferred option. If extraction is more appropriate, we'll explain why and discuss every suitable alternative with you.

How long does root canal treatment take?
The length of treatment depends on the tooth being treated and the complexity of the case. Your dentist will explain what to expect during your consultation and whether your treatment is likely to be completed in one visit or over more than one appointment.

How should I look after my tooth after root canal treatment?
Your tooth may feel slightly tender for a short time following treatment. Continue brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning carefully between your teeth, and avoid putting unnecessary pressure on the treated tooth until your dentist advises otherwise. Regular dental examinations will also help us monitor the tooth and any restoration placed afterwards.
